Turkmen Goresh is the traditional wrestling style of Turkmenistan. Wrestlers, known as ‘Palvans’, dress in a special uniform consisting of white trousers, green and red special shirts and blue belts. Athletes must also wear wrestling shoes providing firm support to the ankles. Goresh competitions take place on the standard United World Wrestling mats of 12х12 meters. Wrestlers earn points by forcing their opponent to touch the ground with any part of their body except their feet.
There are two different sub-styles of Turkmen Goresh, Classic and Freestyle, which differ as follows:
In Classic Goresh, it is strictly forbidden to grasp the opponent below the belt line, to trip him/her or to use one’s legs actively on his/her opponent to perform any action, with the exception of the use of a bent leg (spring hip throw) when the opponent is in the air.
In Freestyle Goresh, however, it is permissible to grasp the legs of the opponent, to trip him/her and to use one’s legs actively to perform any action.
