Licenses & Insurance for Athletes in all Wrestling Styles

OLYMPIC STYLES, ASSOCIATED STYLES & BEACH WRESTLING LICENSES

General information

UWW License is obligatory for all Athletes U15 (School boys & girls), U17 (Cadet), U20 (Junior), Senior, U23 and Veteran who take part in a competition published in the UWW Calendar. This rule applies in all UWW Styles, Olympic, Associated and Beach Wrestling. The license is bought by the Athlete's National Federation, and is valid until the end of the year in all styles and age categories. The license insures the Athletes to UWW competitions under certain conditions, and enables our Federations to register them to our competitions.

Athletes attending U15 competitions are insured by UWW and must ask for a free licence via Athena.  Federations should create their athlete in Athena, upload a photo, passport, Annual Medical Certificate and ask for the licence, but no payment will be required. ID cards may be accepted for 13 & 14 years old wrestlers.

2024 LICENSE DOCUMENTS

For Athletes of all age categories, the UWW Annual Medical Certificate and Wrestler's Declaration is requested (no other document is accepted). It has to be signed by a Doctor and by the Athlete, and is available below

If you have questions concerning the age categories of your athletes, you may check our chart below

Insurance

In the event of an accident or illness during a trip to a competition abroad registered in the UWW calendar, our licensees are insured by IMSSA Insurance. IMSSA guarantees the medical expenses abroad (only if the accident/illness occurred for the first time during the competition). On the return to the country of residence for the continuation of treatment, IMSSA will intervene on a subsidiary basis, that means that IMSSA may settle the medical expenses that are not paid by the licensee's local insurance. Licensees must therefore apply for a local insurance in their country of residence.

When a licensee participates in a UWW competition in his country of residence, IMSSA does not cover any expenses related to illness, but only accident expenses and on a subsidiary basis.

See the full details of the risk insured by IMSSA under Governance / License / Insurance.

Athena

Each UWW Federation is fully accountable for all wrestlers in its country. Therefore, licenses are purchased by our Federations prior to competitions. Licenses are not sold on site, nor to individuals. They are sold via our Athena platform, dedicated towards athlete's management.

https://athena.uww.org

Our Federations received the access to Athena from our IT Team. The Federation can log into its account : enter its username (which is the official UWW email address of the Federation) and password.

In case of a lost password, the Federation should enter its username, and click on "Lost password" The procedure will be sent immediately to its official email address.

For the purchase of a new license (athlete who never had one in the past) there are three tasks to be completed : upload a valid passport copy (no ID card is accepted except for 13 and 14 years old athletes), a photo and the UWW annual Medical Certificate.

UWW will then validate these documents within a few days. Here is our tutorial if necessary.

For the renewal of a license (athlete who already had one in the past), please upload the UWW Annual medical certificate. Our tutorial is here.

When documents are validated by UWW, Federation can buy the license, and choose, at the end of the process, 2 forms of payment

  • Credit card (NO FEE !!). In this case, license will be confirmed by UWW within 7 days.
  • Bank transfer : UWW will send an invoice to the Federation, and upon receipt of the payment, the license will be confirmed by UWW within 7 days.

In both cases, when the purchase is completed, the Federation will receive a confirmation order on its official email address.

VETERAN : In addition to the annual Medical Certificate and Wrestler's declaration to be uploaded in Athena, each veteran wrestler shall pass a medical examination in his own country, one week before the competition start date. The below UWW Veteran Medical Certificate should be filled and signed by a certified Doctor, and delivered to UWW Doctor of the competition at the pre-weighing medical examination”

Validity

When the licence is confirmed by UWW on Athena, it will be valid until the end of the year. Licences bought in November and December of each year are valid until the end of the year which follows the purchase.

Personal license card

In 2016 our IT Team implemented a new license card with QR code, reloadable from one year to another. Wrestlers who had their license bought in 2016 received it via their National Federation a few weeks later. So the card of each new athlete is sent to the Federation. When the Federation renews the license the following year, the validity is immediately visible with the QR code. The licensee card can be kept during an entire sport's career, as it is reusable.
Each athlete has to present it at the weigh-in to our Referee or Delegate and wrestlers without a card are not be eligible to the competition. The list of licensees of each country (printable via Athena by the Federation)  also contains a QR code, and is accepted as valid proof for license.
