Selection of Host Cities for 2017 Championships Announced

CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY, Switzerland (June 2) – The executive committee of United World Wrestling has announced the host cities for several 2017 international competitions.

Headlining the announcement is Tehran who earned the Greco-Roman and freestyle World Cups for 2017. Iran has hosted the past four Greco-Roman World Cups. The freestyle World Cup moves from Los Angeles where it was held the past three seasons and returns to Iran’s capital city where it was last held in 2013.

The Junior World Championships will make its first trip to Finland, with Tampere hosting one of wrestling’s most popular and well-watched events. The Cadet World Championships will be held Athens, the site of the 2004 Olympic Games.

The Senior European Championships travel to Belgrade, a short drive from Zrenjanin, where the 2016 European Olympic Qualifier was held in April. Nearby Sarajevo, in Bosnia and Herzegovina will, host the Cadet European Championships while Dortmund, Germany earned the right to host the Junior European Championships.

The U23 European Championships head to Budapest, the city that hosted the popular 2013 Senior World Championships. The Veteran world championships will also remain in Europe with Plovdiv, Bulgaria hosting the sport’s master-class of competitors.

Marrakech receives the Cadet, Junior and Senior African Championships – the first time the Moroccan capital has hosted all three age groups in one event.

The Senior Asian Championships will be held in New Delhi who last hosted the event in 2013, while the Cadet Asian Championships head to Bangkok.

More locations and dates for future events will be released in the coming weeks.
