CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY, Switzerland (September 8) -- An Extraordinary Congress, convened by the UWW Bureau, approved an amendment to the Constitution clarifying that the two-term limit for the UWW President, introduced in 2021, does not apply to terms served prior to the adoption of the 2021 amendment introducing such limit.
A total of 119 votes were registered and the amendments were approved by a 114 to 5 vote.
The clarification was sought to address questions arising from the absence of an express transitional provision in the Statutes. The Bureau determined that such clarification was necessary to avoid the uncertainty linked with diverging interpretations, and the continuation of unnecessary legal disputes which have been already engaged in this respect.
The amendment enacted by the Congress provides clarity and certainty regarding the interpretation and application of the UWW Constitution and should allow a serene conduct of the elections scheduled at the Ordinary Congress which will be held on October 23 in Astana.
