BAKU – Khetag GAZUMOV (AZE) defeated the London 2012 Olympic Games gold and silver medal winners to grab his fourth light heavyweight crown in men’s freestyle at the Golden Grand Prix Final international wrestling tournament.

Olympic bronze medalist Gazumov defeated London 2012 champion Jake VARNER (USA), 5-1, in the first round at 97kg and then picked apart silver medalist Valeri ANDRIITSEV (UKR) in the final with leg attacks and arm drags on his way to a 9-4 victory, avenging a loss to the Ukrainian in London.

Gazumov’s win also capped a successful night for the tournament hosts with three champions, three silver and seven bronze medals.

European champion Haji ALIEV (AZE) picked apart world silver medalist Vladimir DUBOV (BUL) by technical fall at 61kg, and Jabrail HASANOV (AVE) rolled up six points with an early gut wrench and fashioned a technical fall over defending champion and world bronze medalist Rashida KURBANOV (UZB) in the 74kg final.

Tournament guests also grabbed their share of gold as Russian wrestlers won two categories along with single champions from Georgia, the United States and Ukraine.

Yarygin Grand Prix winner Israil KASUMOV (RUS) defeated European champion Ruslan DIBIRGADZHIEV (AZE), 8-2, in the semifinals at 70kg and would not be denied in the final, despite being dropped for four points by Emin AZIZOV (AZE) in a 6-4 win.

European champion Vladimir KHINCHEGASHVILI (GEO) defeated returning champion Akhmednabi GVARZATILOV (AZE) with timely takedowns and match management skills at 57kg, while Brent METCALF (USA) uncorked a front headlock and drop for four points and ducked behind for two more to win, 6-6, on criteria at 65kg.
