Basci Wins Battle of World Champs, Grabs Ticket to Rio at 1st World OG Qualifier

By William May

ULAANBAATAR (April 22) – Peter BACSI (HUN) won the battle of 2014 world champions on Friday and emerged with a ticket to Rio 2016 at the first World Olympic Games Qualifying Tournament in Ulaanbaatar.

Bacsi, the world champ at 80kg two years ago, hung up seven points in the first period of his early morning showdown with Arsen JULFALAKYAN (ARM), world champion at 75kg and London 2012 silver medalist.

Basci marched into the 75kg finals to secure a berth in his third Olympic Games and will face the surprising YANG Bin (CHN), who won the Hungarian Grand Prix title in Bacsi’s backyard in February.

Julfalakyan stormed back through repechage for a bronze medal and his own shot at a third berth in the Olympic Games. He faces recently crowned European champion Pascal EISELE (GER) in a special playoff between bronze medalists for a berth at Rio 2016.

Eisele knocked off 80kg world champ Selcuk CEBI (TUR) by technical fall in the second bronze medal match at 75kg to keep alive his own hopes to book a ticket to Rio.

Meanwhile, London 2012 gold medalist Hamid SORYAN (IRI) tumbled out of the competition at 59kg in the round of 16 at the hands 2013 world champion Ivo ANGELOV (BUL), 9-4.

Angelov, in turn, was thrown twice in the quarterfinals by KIM Seung-Hak (KOR) and then knocked out of the consolation bracket by 2014 world bronze medalist Elmurat TASMURADOV (UZB).

Kim went on to secure Korea’s third berth in Greco-Roman for Rio while Tasmuradov took a bronze medal for a chance at the third ticket on offer at 59kg.  Tasmuradov will face London 2012 silver medalist Revaz LASHKHI (GEO) in the playoff.

Kim takes on Stig Andre BERGE (NOR) in the 59kg final after the 2014 world bronze medalist secured Norway’s first berth in the Rio 2016 wrestling events.

London Olympians Edgaras VENCKAITIS (LTU) and Amer HRUSTANOVIC (AUT) each have a chance to earn the first tickets for their countries at Rio 2016 with wins in the bronze medal playoffs Friday evening.

Venckaitis, who finished seventh at London 2012, takes on RaVaughn PERKINS (USA) in the 66kg wrestle-off, while Hrustanovic, 10th in London, takes on European under-23 bronze medalist Zakarias BERG (SWE) at 85kg.
