This innovative programme provides a clear roadmap for coaches at every stage of their career, ensuring they have the knowledge, skills, and experience needed to train athletes effectively and safely.
The Coach Education Pathway addresses a critical need in our sport: providing coaches with standardized, high-quality education that progresses alongside their experience.
Whether you're a former athlete transitioning into coaching, a physical education teacher introducing wrestling to students, or a national team coach preparing athletes for World Championships, this pathway offers the framework and resources to enhance your coaching expertise. By integrating free online courses from the UWW Academy with practical experience requirements and mentorship opportunities, the programme ensures coaches develop both theoretical knowledge and hands-on competency.
Point-Based System
The pathway uses an innovative points-based system that rewards both education and coaching success. Coaches accumulate points through completing mandatory UWW Academy courses, attending workshops, gaining coaching experience, achieving athlete success at competitions, and contributing to the wrestling community.
This flexible approach recognizes that coaching excellence comes from multiple sources and allows coaches to progress at their own pace while meeting rigorous standards. All UWW Academy courses required for progression are available free of charge, removing financial barriers and making world-class coach education accessible globally.

Four Levels
The pathway consists of four progressive levels, each building upon the previous stage.
Level 1: Foundation Coach targets new coaches or those starting their educational journey and focuses on basic techniques, rules, safety, and fundamental coaching principles.
Level 2: Development Coach is designed for those working with competitive youth wrestlers, emphasizing technical depth, athlete development, and competition preparation.
Level 3: Performance Coach serves coaches training elite youth or national-level competitors, covering advanced tactics, periodization, mental preparation, and match analysis.
Level 4: Master Coach represents the pinnacle of coaching expertise, focusing on leadership, mentorship, research contribution, and cutting-edge methodologies for national team coaches and elite training center leaders.
Beginning your progression through the Coach Education Pathway is straightforward. First, complete the mandatory requirements that apply to all levels: Athlete Safeguarding Training (renewed yearly), Basic First Aid Training, and the UWW Academy's "Ready to Wrestle" course. Next, take the initial assessment and submit your CV detailing your wrestling and coaching experience. An expert panel will evaluate your background and may request a video demonstration of your coaching skills to determine your appropriate starting level. Once placed, you'll receive clear guidance on the courses, experiences, and achievements needed to progress to the next level.
