CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY (October 20) – Representatives from United World Wrestling travelled to Armenia and Georgia last week to take part in the UNESCO sponsored anti-doping project “UNESCO Fund for the Elimination of Doping in Sport.”

The effort was coordinated by the Prof. Areg Hovhvannissyan from the Anti-Doping Agency of Armenia who coordinated the three seminars across two countries: Erevan (ARM), Gyumri (ARM) and Tbilisi (GEO).  The Gyumi seminar included Mr. Aleksanyan the coach and father of Artur Aleksanyan.

More than 200 wrestlers, coaches and administrators in total attended the workshops.

Athletes and coaches participated in each of the seminars and focused on subjects like the consequences of doping on health and the type of sanctions they often incur. It was underlined that, in addition to suspension and its social consequences for athletes, National Federations were subject to financial sanctions (20’000 Swiss Francs) for doping violations during UWW championships.

The message was also made clear that coaches could also be subject to suspension when it is proven that they participated in doping.
