Former junior world champion Khadzhimurad GADZHIYEV (AZE) has won medals at all age-group European and World Championships. At the 2019 Worlds, he participated at 74kg and finished seventh. He defeated two-time Olympics medalist Sushil KUMAR (IND), Rio medalist Soner DEMITRAS (TUR), Asian champion Bekzod ABDURAKHMONOV (UZB) but lost to former Olympic champ Jordan BURROUGHS (USA) in the semifinals. But at the European Qualifiers, he sailed through his field and entered the final to qualify for the Tokyo Games, which will be his debut Olympics. He had suffered a career-threatening injury at the European Championships against Frank CHAMIZO (ITA). Gadhiyev was born in Argvani in the Gumbetovsky district of Dagestan, Russia.
