A silver medalist from the 2019 World Championships, Alex KESSIDIS (SWE) won the spot for Tokyo in Nursultan. In the quarterfinals, he defeated two-time world bronze medalist Mohammad GERAEI (IRI) and Karapet CHALYAN (ARM) in the semifinals to qualify. Born to a Greek father and Swedish mother, Kessidis wrestled for Greece early on but switched to Sweden in 2014. His brother Laokratis is also a Greco-Roman wrestler and wrestles for Greece. Kessidis hails from a family of wrestlers as his father, uncle and even grandfather practiced wrestling. He also won a gold medal at the U23 European Championships in 2017. Kessidis will be seeded second for the Games.
