CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY (June 7) – Artem SURKOV (RUS) cobbled together a technical fall over Rio 2016 gold medalist Davor STEFANEK (SRB) at the European championships to become one of three new No.1’s in United World Wrestling’s Greco-Roman rankings for June.

Surkov, winner of the Golden Grand Prix Final in November, leapfrogged five places from No.6 to the top spot at 66kg ahead of Stefanek as well as Asian championship finalists OH Sang-Hoon (KOR) and Almat KEBISPAYEV (KAZ).

In addition to Surkov at the top of the rankings, Viktor LORINCZ (HUN) took the European title at 85kg to emerge the new No.1 at middleweight while Rio 2016 silver medalist Yasmany LUGO CABRERA (CUB) assumed the top spot at 98kg to give Cuba its third wrestler atop the rankings.

Lorincz, who finished fifth in Rio de Janeiro, retooled his wrestling over the winter, winning titles in Zagreb and Szombathely before grabbing last month’s European crown with a win over Vehbi Emre winner Metehan BASAR (TUR).

Early favorites at 85, Rio gold medalist David CHAKVETADZE (RUS) and last year’s European runner-up Robert KOBLIASHVILI (GEO) also fell in the preliminaries in Novi Sad, with formerly top-ranked Chakvetadze slid to No.4 in the rankings.

Lugo Cabrera, meanwhile, earned the No.1 ranking with his victory at the Pan American championships in Lauro de Freitas, Brazil and with a loss in Novi Sad by world and Olympic Games champion Artur ALEKSANYAN (ARM).

Lugo Cabrera joined Cuba’s Rio gold medal pair Ismael BORRERO MOLINA (59kg) and Mijain LOPEZ NUNEZ (130kg) at the top of the rankings. In all, Cuban wrestlers won four Pan American titles in Brazil with Oscar PINO HINDS (130kg) joining Lopez at No.12 on the super heavyweight poll.

Also, 2015 world champion Rasul CHUNAYEV (AZE), returning to 71kg from 66kg, appeared poised to regain the top spot after winning the Nikola Petrov title in April with a win over reigning world champ Balint KORPASI (HUN).

Korpasi, however, rebounded with a semifinal win over Poddubny titlist Abuyazid MANTSIGOV (RUS) on his way to his first European title to hold onto the No.1 ranking while Chunayev slipped to third place in the Islamic Solidarity Games.

Wrestlers in the rankings are listed by name, country code, most notable or most recent result over the last 12 months, and their position in the previous rankings.
