Russia and America Split Freestyle Titles at Brazil Cup as Japan Controls Greco-Roman

By Tim Foley

RIO DE JANEIRO (November 29) – The Russian and American freestyle teams each took four weight classes as the Brazil Cup came to a close Saturday night in Rio de Janeiro, with Russia capturing the team title.

Rustam AMPAR (RUS) kicked off the Russian’s winning day with a hard fought 2-1 win at 61kg over Nakata YO (JPN). The Russian lightweight was losing via criteria but set up a series of attacks on the edge of the mat to find a late point and the 61kg title.

Zaurbek SIDAKOV outpaced teammate Shiksaid DZHALILOV 2-1 in the 65kg finals as Khetik TSABLOV (74kg) used a pair of high-scoring scrambles to build a technical fall victory over Mao OKUI (JPN), 12-2.

Russia’s Gadzhi RADZHABOV (86kg) closed out the Russian performance with a commanding, but bloody, win over Jordan Steen (CAN), 7-1 at 86kg.

Russia scored 76 team points, the United States finished second with 64 and Japan in third with 51.

On the American side Andrew HOCHSTRASSER (USA) used two four-point throws to power his way past Khasankhuseyn BADRUDINOV (RUS) 13-7 at 57kg. The American found both his throws at the edge of the mat, frustrating the young Russian who had stayed in constant attack.

Kyle RUSCHELL also struck gold for the Americans powering back from a 3-0 deficit to find three crotch lifts in the first period and two more in the second to secure his 70kg title, 11-5. At 97kg J.D. BERGMAN used an early high amplitude throw to build a 4-0 lead before stepping over Rasul MAGOMEDOV (RUS) failed throw to earn the second period fall.

America closed out their competition with 125kg competitor Zach REY (USA) going undefeated in a round-robin bracket.

In Greco-Roman Japan outperformed the competition closing the “classic style” with a pair of titles to end with a total of five gold medals. The Japanese squad was led on day two by Masato SUMI (JPN) who went 3-0 at 85kg without ceding a point to the competition. Sumi’s efforts were mirrored by Yuya MAETA (JPN) who went 2-0 in nordic action to take the title at 80kg.

Sweden finished Saturday’s with two additional gold medals as Fredrik SCHON (SWE) found the technical fall against hometown favorite Davi ALBINO (BRA), 11-2. Johan EUREN (SWE) went undefeated at 130kg to earn his first Brazil Cup title.

Japan took the team title with 75 points. Brazil finished in silver with 66 points and Sweden in third with 39 points.
