MACON, France (31 August) – Zviadi PATARIDZE (GEO) won his fourth age-group championship title Wednesday and capped Georgia’s hat trick on the final day of Greco-Roman events at the Junior World Wrestling Championships.
Pataridze toppled challenger Osman YILDIRIM (TUR) in the Greco-Roman finale at Le Spot exhibition hall to secure the team title for Georgia after earlier triumphs from Dato CHKHARTISHVILI (GEO) at 55kg and defending world champion Ramaz ZOIDZE (GEO) at 66kg.
As Pataridze circled the mats with the Georgian flag in triumph, he flashed four fingers to signify his two cadet world titles in 2013 and 2014 as well as his two junior world crowns. For his first junior crown, Pataridze defeated Sergey SEMENOV (RUS) who most recently took a bronze medal at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
“I very happy to win tonight; it’s like a dream,” Pataridze said after his victory. “I hope I can keep winning at the senior level as win a gold medal at the Olympic Games.”
Asked if that also meant winning at the Tokyo 2020 Games, the 19-year-old Greco-Roman phenom nodded in agreement, adding that he hopes to be as successful as his idol, Alexander KARELIN (URS).
In the finale, Pataridze opened with a quick throw to open the 120kg final with a 4-0 lead over Yildirim. He slipped behind for a takedown one minute later and then executed a lift and back-aching throw on Yildirim for the 10-0 technical fall at 1:21.
The victory gave Georgia, with four champions overall, a 51-40 win in the team race over first-day leader in Russia. Iran, which had five wrestlers in the bronze medal finals, finished third with 34 points, followed by Kyrgyzstan (32) and Kazakhstan (31).
Earlier in the evening, Dato CHKHARTISHVILI (GEO) scored a headlock for two points just before the end of the first period and made it stand for a 3-2 win over Yo NAMBA (JPN) in the 55kg final.
Namba was the first gold medal finalist at the junior world meet for Japan since 1984 when three wrestlers made it to the finals.
At 66kg, defending champ Noidze scored with an arm throw in the first period and stretched it into a 5-0 victory over Asia junior champion Kaharman KISSYMETOV (KAZ).
In the only gold medal match of the evening without a Georgian on the mat, 2014 champion Islam ABBASOV (AZE) plowed defending champ Ali CENGIZ (TUR) out of bounds for a takedown and a 3-1 lead in the second period of the 84kg final and held on for a 3-2 victory to reclaim the title.
In the bronze medal finals at 84kg, Bachir SID AZARA (ALG) won the first medal ever at a wrestling world championships for any age group since Algeria first entered the 1991 senior world championships in Varna, Bulgaria and the 2000 junior world meet in Nantes, France.
