News and Notes: Women's Wrestling 53kg, 63kg and 75kg Final Session

7:29: Erica WIEBE (CAN) captured her first world-level medal, and it came in the form of an Olympic gold. The Canadian shut out 38-year-old Guzel MANYUROVA (KAZ) 6-0 in the finals at 75kg.  In the first period Wiebe countered an attack from Manyurova and scored a takedown to go up 2-0. She added two more takedowns in the final period.

7:17: In the final bronze medal match at 75kg, world No.5 Ekaterina BUKINA (RUS) edged Annabel Laure ALI (CMR) 5-3.  Bukina scored first off the shot clock before Ali scored a takedown to go up 2-1 after the opening period. Bukina retook the lead with a takedown early in the second period. Ali would score a step out point to make it 3-3 on the scoreboard, but Bukina held criteria because of a caution. With five seconds left, Bukina clinched the victory with a takedown.

7:03: 2013 world champion ZHANG Fengliu (CHN) topped Vasilisa MARZALIUK (BLR) 8-4 to take the bronze medal at 75kg. Zhang scored all eight of her points in the first period. 

6:28: Risako KAWAI (JPN) cruised to a 6-0 shutout victory over Maryia MAMASHUK (BLR) to capture the gold medal at 63kg. She becomes Japan's fourth Olympic gold medalist in women's wrestling in Rio. Kawaii scored a takedown in the first, and added two more in the final period, with the last one coming in the final 10 seconds.

6:14: A strong second period helped Monika MICHALIK (POL) get the bronze medal at 63kg. She defeated Inna TRAZHUKOVA (RUS) in the bronze-medal match. Trazhukova scored first off the shot clock, and led 1-0 at the break. Michalik came back strong in the second period with two takedowns and a two-point exposure to claim the 6-3 victory. She becomes Poland's second Olympic medalist in women's wrestling. 

6:02: Yekaterina LARIONOVA (KAZ) won the first bronze medal at 63kg, earning a second-period fall over 2012 world champion Elena PIROZHKOVA (USA). The American looked strong early. After scoring a point off the shot clock, Pirozhkova scored a takedown in the second period to go up 3-0. Larionova then used double overhooks to throw Pirozhkova to her back and secure the fall. 

5:27: Helen MAROULIS (USA) became the first-ever Olympic champion in women's wrestling for the United States, and did so beating a legend, three-time Olympic champion Saori YOSHIDA (JPN). Yoshida led 1-0 after the opening period. Maroulis came back in the second period, ducking under a Yoshida headlock attempt and scoring a takedown to go up 2-1. Then she attacked Yoshida and scored another takedown to go up 4-1, and then held on for the victory.

5:12: World No.2 Sofia MATTSSON (SWE), a six-time world medalist, came out strong, scoring a fall just under 30 seconds over ZHONG Xuechun (CHN) to take the bronze medal at 53kg.

5:08: Natalia SINISHIN (AZE) edged Betzabeth Angeli. ARGUELLO VILLEGAS (VEN) 2-1 for a bronze medal at 53kg in a match that saw no offensive points scored. Sinishin scored first off the shot clock and took a 1-0 lead into the second period. Arguello Villegas scored off the shot clock in the second period, before Sinishin added another point off the shot clock, which was enough for the victory. 

4:42: ZHONG Xuechun (CHN), fifth in the world last year, edged JONG Myong-Suk (PRK) 5-5 on criteria at 53kg. Zhong scored with a four-point arm throw, which gave her the criteria victory. She now faces world No.2 Sofia MATTSSON (SWE).

4:32: Natalia SINISHIN (AZE) blanked Isabelle SAMBOU (SEN) 4-0 in repechage at 53kg. She will now face Betzabeth ARGUELLO (VEN) for the bronze medal. 

4:22: ZHANG Fengliu (CHN), a 2013 world champion, was impressive in picking up a 10-0 technical fall over Maria SELMAIER (GER) in repechage at 75kg. She will now wrestle for the bronze medal against Vasilisa MARZALIUK (BLR).

4:16: LAURE ALI ANNABEL (CMR) will wrestle for the bronze medal after defeating Zsanett NEMETH (HUN) 5-2 in repechage at 75kg. 

4:14: Monika MICHALIK (POL) topped 2014 world bronze medalist Anastasija GRIGORJEVA (LAT) 5-2 to advance to the bronze-medal match at 63kg. She will now face Inna TRAZHUKOVA (RUS). 

4:06: Ekaterina LARIONOVA (KAZ) used an inside trip to earn a fall over Henna JOHANSSON (SWE) in repechage at 63kg. 

4:03: World No.4 ZHONG Xuechun (CHN), who placed fifth at the Worlds last year, dominated Yulia KHAVALDHZY (UKR) 10-0 in the opening match of repechage at 53kg.
