News and Notes: Freestyle Wrestling 57kg and 74kg Final Session

6:44: Trailing 6-4 with under 10 seconds remaining, Hassan YAZDANICHARATI (IRI) secured a takedown on a bruised, battered and bloodied Aniuar GEDUEV (RUS) to take the lead on criteria and win the match 6-6 and capture the Olympic gold medal at 74kg. Geduev, a world bronze medalist last year, dominated the first period, scoring three takedowns, to take a 6-0 lead into the break. He appeared to be on his way to winning the title. But the 21-year-old Iranian preserved through multiple medical timeouts by Geduev, kept the pressure on, and came through with three takedowns in the final period - with the final one coming with eight seconds on the clock - to win the match in dramatic fashion.

6:20: Soner DEMIRTAS (TUR) blanked Galymzhan USSERBAYEV (KAZ) 6-0 in the second bronze-medal match at 74kg. It's the first world-level medal for the European champion Demirtas. 

6:07: Jabrayil HASANOV (AZE) rebounded from his semifinal loss to claim the bronze medal at 74kg, beating Bekzod ABDURAKHMANOV (UZB) 9-7. Hasanov, a two-time world medalist, built an 8-2 lead after three takedowns and two step outs. Abdurakhmanov mounted a late rally, and came within a point but was unable to overcome the deficit. Hasanov was fifth in the 2012 London Olympics.

5:34: After finishing second in the last Olympic Games, Vladimer KHINCHEGASHVILI (GEO) captured the gold medal at 57kg with a 4-3 victory over Rei HIGUCHI (JPN). Higuchi led 3-0 in the second period, but Khinchegashvili battled back with a chest lock throw for two points, and then gain another point off the shot clock to make the score 3-3 and give him the lead on criteria. A late unsuccessful challenge gave the Georgian a 4-3 win.  Last year he won his first world title.

5:19: Hassan RAHIMI (IRI), a 2013 world champion, claimed his fourth straight world-level medal after earning a fall over Yowlys BONNE RODRIGUEZ (CUB) in the second period of their bronze-medal match at 57kg. Rahimi led 5-0 after the opening period, then extended his lead to 7-0 before taking down the Cuban and earning the fall. 

5:08: Two-time world champion Haji ALIYEV (AZE) earned a fall over two-time world medalist Vladimir Vladimirov DUBOV (BUL) to take the bronze medal at 57kg. Dubov jumped out to a 4-0 lead after a takedown and gut wrench turn. Aliyev battled back with a takedown and step out to make the score 4-3 at the break. Then, midway through the second period, Aliyev hit a high crotch and put Dubov to his back and secured the fall with 1:10 remaining in the match.

4:44: Yowlys BONNE RODRIGUEZ (CUB), a past world bronze medalist, used two four-point throws to roll to an 11-1 technical fall over two-time world champion YANG Kyong Il (PRK) at 57kg. He will now meet 2013 world champion Hassan RAHMI (IRI) for the bronze medal.

4:38: In an action-filled match, two-time world champion Haji ALIYEV (AZE) topped Nurislam SANAYEV (KAZ) 10-8 in repechage at 57kg. Aliyev used a headlock in the first period to go up 4-0. A short time later the two wrestlers got in a flurry, which resulted in Sanayev scoring four and Aliyev scoring two, making the score 6-6. Aliyev extended his lead to 9-6 after a takedown and caution and one. Sanayev responded with a takedown to make it 9-8, before a late step out gave Aliyev a two-point victory. 

4:24: European champion Soner DEMIRTAS (TUR) needed just 1:10 to pick up a 12-0 technical fall over Asnage CASTELLY (HAI) in repechage at 74kg.

4:20: Bekzod ABDURAKHMONOV (UZB) moved on to the bronze-medal match at 74kg after picking up an 11-1 technical fall over Olympic champion Jordan BURROUGHS (USA). Abdurakhmonov was able to get to Burroughs' legs multiple times and convert to takedowns. He scored three takedowns in the first period, and added two more in the final period. 

4:07: YANG Kyong Il (PRK), a two-time world champ and 2012 Olympic bronze medalist, gave up the first takedown, but came back to score six unanswered points and win 6-2 over Asadulla LACHINAU (BLR) in the first repechage match at 57kg.
