BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (July 9) – Five champions and ten total medalists cleared the way for the United States to bring home the men’s freestyle team title on Sunday evening at the Cadet Pan American Championships.
The win gave the U.S. its third team title in as many days as it swept the field in all three international styles of wrestling. Moreover, every U.S. entrant this weekend picked up a medal, 15 of which were gold.
Two American men pulled off the always-difficult double gold by winning titles in both Greco-Roman and freestyle. Carson MANVILLE (USA) achieved this feat at 58 kg, while Peyton ROBB (USA) did so at 69 kg. Coincidentally, both men hail from the state of Minnesota.
Robb was especially impressive as the weekend unfolded. He steamrolled through the freestyle tournament with three 10-0 technical fall victories, including his decisive win over Adam Michael SCOTT (CAN) in the gold-medal match. Add in his Greco-Roman results, and Robb won all six of his matches by technical fall, outscoring his opponents by a combined 57-0 mark.
The sweet surprise of the day for the U.S. was 76 kg champion Michael O’MALLEY (USA). Like his teammate Robb, O’Malley ran through the 76 kg bracket with three 10-0 technical falls. He outfought Carson LEE (CAN) in the championship match. O’Malley was awarded the Golden Boot as the most outstanding wrestler of the men’s freestyle tournament.
American talents Parker DECKER (USA) and Hunter DEJONG (USA) added to their nation’s gold medal tally. Decker outlasted the gritty Ramon Alejandro GUZMAN ROMERO (MEX) 10-7 in the 46 kg gold-medal final. DeJong posted a perfect 4-0 record in a five-man round robin at 85 kg with two pins on the day.
The U.S. tallied silver medals from Hunter LEWIS (USA) at 50 kg, King SANDOVAL (USA) at 54 kg and Greco-Roman champion Jace PUNKE (USA) at 100 kg, in addition to bronze medals from Greco-Roman champion Tommy CURRAN (USA) at 42 kg and Kevon DAVENPORT (USA) at 63 kg.
With its 10-medal performance, the U.S. amassed 93 team points to edge the stingy runners-up from Canada by five points. Canada put together a nine-medal outing with three gold medalists. Mexico found itself in third place with 72 team points, eight medalists and two champions.
63 kg champion Trystan Hideki KATO (CAN) won the most competitive final of the tournament in last-second fashion. Trailing by three points in the final moments, Kato secured a takedown and turn as time expired to defeat Diego Antonio SANDOVAL ZARCO (MEX), 9-8.
Lachlan Maurice MCNEIL (CAN) turned in the most dominant Canadian performance of the day with two technical fall victories, plus a nine-point win over runner-up Lewis of the United States, on his way to the 50 kg gold.
Big man Kyle Ruben Jason JORDON (CAN) had his way with the 100 kg field to add Canada’s third gold medal in men’s freestyle. He won four total bouts in a five-man round-robin bracket with two of his wins coming by way of pin and one by 10-0 technical fall. He edged the United States’ Punke, who won the silver medal, in the first round of action, 3-1.
Mexico navigated two lightweight athletes to gold medals, Juan Carlos LAVAT CORTEZ (MEX) at 42 kg and Roberto ALEJANDRO BLANCO (MEX) at 54 kg. Lavat Cortez went a perfect 3-0 in the 42 kg round-robin bracket with two pins to his credit. Alejandro Blanco posted two 10-0 wins, one fall and a 5-2 decision in the championship match over Sandoval from the U.S.
