Yusup BATIRMURZAEV (KAZ) won ticket to Tokyo for Kazakhstan by winning Asian Olympic qualifying tournament in home country. Defeated Sumit MALIK (IND) 2-0 with 2 stepouts in semifinals, then Lkhagvagerel MUNKHTUR (MGL) 4-2 in final with 3 stepouts. Was selected over Asian champion Oleg BOLTIN (KAZ) based on victory over him at 2020 Matteo Pellicone Tournament (won silver medal) and better showing this June at Poland Open, where he won bronze medal and Boltin lost in 1st round....Also took bronze at Ali Aliev Tournament two weeks later...Gold medalist at 2020 Asian Championships with 10-0 technical fall in final over Khuderbulga DORJKHAND (MGL)...2019 world U-23 bronze medalist. Lost to Amir ZARE (IRI) 17-7 in quarterfinals, beat Zuriko URTASHVILI (GEO) 13-2 in bronze-medal match. Also Asian U-23 champion that year, beating Munkhtur in final....Dagestan native made debut for Kazakhstan by taking bronze medal at 2015 D.A. Kunaev Tournament.
