BUDAPEST, HUNGARY (September 22) – KIM Hyeon-Woo (KOR) defeated Roman VLASOV (RUS) in a meeting of London 2012 Olympic Games gold medalists, but Russia won the team title for the Greco-Roman events as the senior wrestling world championships came to a close.
KIM, the winner at 66kg in London, scored a second-period takedown in the 74kg final at Papp Laszlo Budapest Sports Arena to edge reigning Olympic, world and European champion VLASOV, 2-1.
KIM’s triumph at 74kg followed another Korean win over an Olympic Games gold medalist at 66kg as RYU Han-Su (KOR) hung a disqualification on Beijing 2008 champion Islam-Beka ALBIEV (RUS) in the 66kg final.
The third and final gold medal of the evening went to Amir ALIAKBARI (IRI) at 120kg, giving Iran its second gold medal of the Greco-Roman competition.
In the team rankings, Russia stretched its one-point lead a day earlier to a six-point win, 43-37, over Korea. Russia had one champion (Nikita MELNIKOV, 96kg) and three silver medalists while Korea claimed a silver medal and bronze medal along with its two champions on the final evening of competition.
Hungary, which stood one point behind Russia on Saturday evening, faded to third place with the semifinals loss of London 2012 silver medalist Tamas LORINCZ (HUN) at 66kg and a fifth place from Mihaly DEAK BARDOS (HUN) at 120kg.
Still, with three bronze medals won during the first two days of Greoc-Roman competition, Hungary finished third in the team rankings with 31 points.
66kg – RYU Han-Su (KOR) defeated Islam-Beka ALBIEV (RUS) by disqualification when the Beijing 2008 gold medalist failed to make a clean start in par terre in the second period of the championship final.
ALBIEV stepped over a lift-and-throw attempt by RYU in the first period for a 2-0 lead, but RYU came back in the second period with a gut wrench in the secon for a 4-3 lead.
When ALBIEV got his final chance at par terre, his failure to make a clean start resulted in a disqualification at 5:10 and set off some Gangnam-style dancing in the Korean corner.
In the bronze medal finals, Tulsi Yadan SANDEEP (IND) scored with a gut wrench in the second period and added a go-behind takedown from an under-arm spin to defeat 2012 European bronze medal winner Aleksandar MAKSIMOVIC (SRB), 4-0.
SANDEEP’s win made him India’s first medalist in Greco-Roman at a senior world championships.
Frank STAEBLER (GER) arched over with a three-point throw from par terre to defeat 2010 world champion Hasan ALIYEV (AZE), 5-2, and claim Germany’s first medal in the world championships Greco-Roman since 2005.
74kg – In the battle of Olympic champions, KIM Hyeon-Woo (KOR) got behind in a flurry of action midway through the second period and made it stand for a 2-1 victory over defending world champion Roman VLASOV (RUS).
In the bronze medal finals, Beijing 2008 silver medalist Arsen JULFALAKYAN (ARM) scored with a gut wrench midway through the first period and controlled the action the rest of the match for a 3-0 victory over Mark MADSEN (DEN).
Mediterranean Games champion Emrah KUS (TUR) scored three takedowns with the last one securing a technical fall over Veri-Kalli SUOMINEN (FIN), 7-0 at 5:54.
120kg – Amir ALIAKBARI, the 2010 world champion at 96kg, scored quickly with a pair of force-outs in the first period and then added a takedown going out of bounds in the second for a 4-0 win over London 2012 silver medalist Heiki NABI (EST).
In the bronze medal finals, Nurmakhan TINALIEV (KAZ) scored a pair of force-outs and landed on top of a lateral drop attempt on his way to a 5-0 win over veteran Mihaly DEAK BARDOS (HUN) and a bronze medal for his third straight world championships.
In a battle between the two London 2012 bronze medalists, Riza KAYAALP (TUR) hit an arm throw at 1:45 of the first period for a 3-0 win over Johan EUREN (SWE).
