Batirov Adds Bahrain to Rio 2016 Wrestling Events at 1st World OG Qualifier

By William May

ULAANBAATAR (April 24) – Asia champion and former Russian national team member Adam BATIROV (BRN) racked up five wins on Sunday to add Bahrain to the list of countries sending wrestlers to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Batirov rolled over 2014 world silver medalist Yakup GOR (TUR), 7-2, in the 65kg semifinals to book Bahrain’s place at Rio 2016, then fashioned a 3-1 win over Zurabi IAKOBISHVILI (GEO) for the tournament title.

With Batirov’s triumph, Bahrain will send its first-ever wrestler to the Olympic Games since first competing at the summer Olympic Games in 1984.

Meanwhile, Iakobishvili, who narrowly missed qualifying at the European meet one week ago, came through with a 5-4 win against Borislav NOVACHKOV (BUL) in the semifinals to complete Georgia’s list of freestyle qualifiers with six.

Azerbaijan also earned its sixth qualification in freestyle from 2014 junior world runner-up Mirjalal HASANZADE (AZE), who defeated Asia champion Sandeep TOMAR (IND), 8-8, in the closing seconds of the 57kg semifinals.

Moldova qualified its first wrestlers for Rio 2016 as Evgheni NEDEALCO (MDA) and Nicolae CEBAN (MDA) each won in the special round of bouts between bronze medal winners in freestyle and Greco-Roman.

Nedealco fashioned a 6-0 shutout of Oleg BILOTSERKIVSKI (UKR) in the 74kg playoff while Ceban booked a place in his third Olympic Games with a pair of late takedowns and a 9-3 win over local favorite DORJKHAND Khuderbulga (MGL) at 97kg.

Dorjkhand was trying to qualify host Mongolia for its sixth position in freestyle at Rio 2016.

European champion Soner DEMIRTAS (TUR) atoned for a loss by fall at last week’s continental qualifier in Serbia with five wins by a combined score of 41-1, including a 12-1 technical fall over Georgi IVANOV (BUL) in the 74kg final.

Beijing 2008 bronze medalist for Russia Georgi KETOEV (ARM) made his international debut for Armenia by winning a ticket to Rio 2016 at 97kg, coming from behind with a four-point back-arching throw in the final for a 4-3 win over Magomed IBRAGIMOV (UZB).

Rio 2016 qualifying action now shifts to Istanbul, where the “last chance” world qualifier will be held May 6-8.
