Safe Sport

Safeguarding Athletes

The International Olympic Committee Consensus Statement (2016) announced that “All athletes have a right to engage in ‘safe sport’, defined as an athletic environment that is respectful, equitable and free from all forms of nonaccidental violence to athletes.” Everyone in sport has a duty of care to protect athletes and to report any abuse they witness or experience.

United World Wrestling takes all necessary actions against all forms of harassment and abuse to ensure a safe sporting environment for all participants of all ages, genders, and races. Policies and regulations have been put in place, with an emphasis on education and creating a safeguarding culture.

All the UWW courses for coaches, the training camps and the workshops include the topic of safe sport to raise awareness and promote our shared values.

A summary of this call was published on Athlete365 here; and also tweeted the article here. Please don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any feedback or comments and feel free to get in touch by emailing at athlete365@olympic.org.

Safeguarding Athletes Toolkit

This toolkit aims to assist National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and International Federations (IFs) in the development of policies and procedures to safeguard athletes from harassment and abuse in sport.

The IOC’s mission is to place athletes at the heart of the Olympic Movement, and Olympic Agenda 2020 sets out the strategic roadmap for this. This includes Recommendation 18: Strengthen support to athletes. Through this recommendation, the IOC has taken significant steps to safeguard athletes from harassment and abuse in sport.
