Labazanov Drops Vlasov for 75kg Crown at Poddubny Grand Prix

By William May

TYUMEN, Russia (January) – Chingiz LABAZANOV (RUS) dropped Roman VLASOV (RUS) for four points early in the 75kg final at the Ivan Poddubny Grand Prix on Sunday and made it stand for a 4-4 upset triumph over the reigning world champ.

Labazanov, the 2014 world champion at 71kg, landed on top of an attempted lift-and-throw by Vlasov from par terre for a 4-0 lead midway through the first period and then weathered the world champs efforts to overcome the deficit.

Despite the loss, Russia’s lone victor in Greco-Roman at the Las Vegas world championships in September still holds the inside track for a trip to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

To grab the ticket from the London 2012 gold medalist, Labazanov reportedly will have to win the European championships crown in March and then, the defending champion will have to repeat at the Russian nationals in June.

Meanwhile, Beijing 2008 gold medalist Islambek ALBIEV (RUS) knocked off a pair of 2015 world bronze medalists at 66kg to post notice that he is seeking a chance to return to the Olympic Games.

Albiev, who won in Beijing at the age of 19, scored a reverse waistlock and turn on his way to a 6-2 win over Adam KURAK (RUS) in the semifinals. He then stepped over an attempted gut wrench by Artem SURKOV (RUS) in the final and held on for a 4-3 triumph.

Surkov was a bronze medal winner at 66kg in Las Vegas, while Kurak earned his bronze medal at the non-Olympic weight category of 71kg.

It was mistakenly noted in the previous version of this report that the Alan KHUGAEV (RUS) who won a bronze medal at the non-Olympic weight category of 80kg was a fellow gold medalist with Vlasov at London 2012.

The Alan Khugaev who defeated Pavel POMINCHUK (BLR) by technical fall in the Poddubny bronze medal final is 24 years old, while the London 2012 gold medalist is 28 years old.

The title went to Ramazan ABACHARAEV (RUS), previously the winner of a pair of bronze medals at the Greco-Roman classic.

At 98kg, Nikita MELNIKOV (RUS) regained the Poddubny heavyweight crown he lost in 2014 – only months after winning the world title in Budapest.  Melnikov avenged his 2014 loss to Musa EVLOEV (RUS) by rolling up a 9-0 technical against the former junior world champ.

Meanwhile, the pre-tourney favorite at 98kg, world bronze medalist Islam MAGOMEDOV (RUS) could not overcome an early four-point deficit in his opening bout and fell, 6-5, to eventual bronze medal winner Kantemir MAGOMEDOV (RUS).
