Cadet World Medalists Aliyev, Kuzko To Clash On Final Day of Cadet European C'ships

By Richard Immel

SARAJEVAO, Bosnia and Herzegovina (July 29) – The final set of Greco-Roman championship bouts has been determined at the Cadet European Championships, with a battle of returning cadet world medalists taking center stage.

Cadet world silver medalist Vladyslav KUZKO (UKR) and cadet world bronze medalist Zaur ALIYEV (AZE) were on a collision course to begin the day. Aliyev dominate all comers by technical fall on his way to the 46kg finals. Kuzko, a defending European champion, won three bouts, including two by close decision, to solidify his finals appearance.

The wealth was distributed rather evenly in terms of finalists, with Ukraine, Georgia, Hungary and Russia each boasting two athletes in a championships match, and Azerbaijan and Turkey sporting one apiece.

Returning European bronze medalist Gergely BAK (HUN) won four bouts, including a 3-1 decision over Nikalas Petrov SULEV (BUL) in the semis, to secure a place in the 63kg gold-medal match. Stout Russian Artem EROKHIN (RUS) is set to face Bak tomorrow.

Beka GURULI (GEO) downed quality competition on his way to the 54kg championship match. Three-time Nordic medalist Sondre SVARSTAD (NOR), European silver medalist Kadir KAMAL (TUR) and Nordic champion Vilius SAVICKAS (LTU) all fell victim to Guruli. His finals opponent will be Myroslav SOLOVIAN (UKR).

Mehmet ATCI (TUR)

The 100kg championship pits Balint VATZI (HUN) against Mehmet ATCI (TUR) in a powerhouse showdown. Vatzi topped Nordic champion Erikas CEREPOKAS (LTU) in his semifinal, 3-0. Atci also picked up a 3-0 decision in his semifinal over Ciprian Ilie TRUFAN (ROU).

Aues GONIBOV (RUS) and Giorgi TSOPURASHVILI (GEO) posted solid wins throughout the day to set a date against one another in the 76kg finals.

The finals for these five Greco-Roman weight categories will take place at 5 p.m. local time on Friday. Repechage rounds commence slightly earlier at 3:30 p.m.
