Biography

In Tokyo, Vinesh will become the only Indian woman wrestler to compete at the Olympics twice. Five years ago in Rio, Vinesh had to forfeit after injuring her knee during her bout against SUN Yanan (CHN) in the quarterfinals and finished 10th. Since those Games, Vinesh has quickly become a star wrestler in India especially with her gold-medal winning performances at Asian Games and Commonwealth Games in 2018. The 26-year-old qualified for the Tokyo Olympics after winning the bronze medal at the 2019 World Championships after losing to Mayu MUKAIDA (JPN) in the pre-quarterfinals in Nursultan. But she came back in repechage to win the medal and the quota. She also has four Ranking Series golds and one silver alongwith eight medals at Asian Championships. The Haryana wrestler, employed by the Indian Railways, is a cousin of the Bollywood movie Dangal fame Phogat sisters -- Geeta and Babita. At the national level, Vinesh has lost only one bout in her career since 2008. She is married to Somveer Rathi, a Greco-Roman wrestler.
