BIOGRAPHY
Estonia's first world medalist and Olympian Epp MAEE (EST) will be headed to Tokyo for her second Olympics. A bronze medalist at the 2015 worlds in Las Vegas, Maee lost in the 1/8 finals in Rio. To qualify for the Tokyo Games, she reached the semifinal of 2019 Worlds by beating Olympic champion Erica WIEBE of Canada. But she lost to Hiroe MINAGAWA. In the bronze medal bout, she defeated ZHOU Qian of China to win the medal. Born in Rakvere, Estonia, Maee has been the torchbearer of women's wrestling in the country having won the national championships a record 13 times. She was introduced to wrestling by her father and her brother has also competed at the European Championships. In 2015, she was named the Estonian Sportswoman of the Year. In 2021, she became the first Estonian woman to become the European champion after she beat Natalia VOROBEVA of Russia.
